Skin Dehydration Signals Guide · 2026

The Fine Lines You're Seeing In The Mirror Probably Aren't Ageing...

Here's how to fix them

Not all fine lines are the same and millions of women confuse the two everyday. Once you know the difference, it's a really simple fix.

Some of the lines you see in the mirror are structural lines that come with ageing but some are probably dehydration lines. Here's how you can tell the difference.

THESE ARE DEHYDRATION LINES. LOOK FAMILIAR?

If this is what you're seeing in the mirror, then this guide was written for you.

What is Dehydrated Skin?

First of all, dehydrated skin is not a skin type. It’s simply the condition your skin is currently in.

Skin types like oily, dry, combination or normal, are mainly determined by how much oil your skin naturally produces. This usually comes down to genetics or hormones and doesn’t tend to change much. You simply manage your skin type.

Skin dehydration, however, can be fixed, once you know how. It relates to how much water your skin contains and retains, and can be caused by environmental factors, lifestyle triggers and many other factors.

Put simply, skin type is determined by oil content, while skin hydration is determined by water content. They are two different things, with different causes and different approaches to treatment.

This means you can have dry, oily, combination or normal skin type and still have skin dehydration.

What does dehydrated skin look and feel like?

Dehydration lines are tiny, fine, crinkly-looking lines that can appear when your skin is lacking water.

You might notice them around the eyes, across the cheeks, on the forehead or around the mouth. They are usually very fine and closely gathered and you might notice them looking worse some days and better others. That's actually another tell-tale sign of dehydration.

Not only can it cause those fine lines to appear, skin dehydration can also cause your normal static/age lines to look more exaggerated. If you look in the mirror and wonder, why do I have more wrinkles recently or why are my lines looking more exaggerated today, then it's probably skin dehydration!

How to fix it

So to really fix this, your skin needs more than a glass or two of water.

Your skin needs flooding with hydration from the outside, as well as the inside, to be able to fight back and replace what life and the environment is continuously trying to take from it.

This is where choosing the RIGHT skincare products matter.

Why your current skincare isn't working

Unfortunately, most moisturisers on the market don’t bring much to the table when it comes to adding adequate hydration to help fight skin dehydration.

Most were formulated with one thing in mind: to create a barrier that locks in whatever hydration was ALREADY there.

This means that if you’re using one of these types of moisturisers, you need to add significant hydration to the skin before applying your moisturiser.

The skincare industry will usually tell you this means applying 4 or 5 different hydrating products BEFORE your moisturiser.

(What a great way to sell you 5 other products to fix one problem, hey?)

But if you don’t feel like standing in front of the mirror for an hour, morning and night, applying 4 face mists, essences, hydrating toners and serums, waiting 10 minutes between each application and racking up a hefty price tag for the pleasure, then you’re not alone.

And there absolutely is a simpler way.

So what's the answer?

To really tackle dehydrated skin, you need a Hydration First Formulation in your routine.

Don't worry, this does not mean adding 4 or 5 extra steps. You can simply switch to a Hydration First Moisturiser.

What to look for...

There are lots of nuances to this, but to keep it simple, here’s our advice:

For a moisturiser to be confidently deemed as a Hydration First Formula, it needs to contain roughly 8 or more hydrators.

Brands can market their moisturiser or call it “hydrating” all day long, but at the end of the day, the formulation doesn’t lie.

Most common moisturisers on the market contain between 4 and 6 basic hydrators, often at very small percentages.

But for those of us with grown-up skin, showing the signs of skin dehydration, we need something that’s been designed with hydration as it's north star.

Before rushing to buy a hydrating moisturiser, run it against this checklist.

We built this clinically evidenced checklist of what to choose and what you might want to avoid. But to make things even easier for you, if you scroll just past the checklist, you’ll see exactly how the 3 products in our comparison score against it, including the formula that ticks every box.

Check your moisturiser’s ingredients, and if it contains fewer than 8 of these, then it probably wouldn’t be classified as a Hydration First Formula.

✔️ CHOOSE

Propanediol

Propanediol is an all-star ingredient. It softens, hydrates, and smooths the skin.

Glycerin

A compound naturally found in your skin. It's a powerhouse humectant that pulls water into the stratum corneum.

Saccharomyces/Rice Ferment Filtrate

Saccharomyces is rich in beta-glucan and has great hydrating properties as well as delivering a radiance to the skin.

Squalane

It is an emollient and skin conditioning agent that is able to integrate seamlessly into the skin's lipid barrier without clogging pores

Trehalose

Trehalose is a disaccharide made of two glucose molecules (glucose is sugar!). Trehalose is used to help moisturize skin. It also has antioxidant properties.

Helianthus Annuus Seed

it forms a thin film on the skin that reduces transepidermal water loss (TEWL) while supplying linoleic acid to the stratum corneum to improve barrier strength.

Tocopherol

Tocopherol is a fat-soluble antioxidant known as Vitamin E. Known as a skin conditioning agent; studies show that regular topical use can improve the skin's water-binding capacity

Sodium Hyaluronate

it works as a humectant. It pulls water from the environment and binds it to the skin's surface.

Opuntia Ficus-Indica Flower Extract

It provides rich antioxidant protection, deeply hydrates and locks in moisture, calms redness and irritation, and supports a healthy skin barrier.

Serine

It is a major player in your skin's natural moisturizing factor (NMF), or the water-loving molecules in your outermost layer of skin (stratum corneum) that keeps everything hydrated and happy.

Urea

Is a humectant that helps draw moisture from the air to help hydrate the skin.

❌ AVOID

Parabens

Some parabens have shown weak oestrogenic/endocrine (hormone like) activity and historical controversy around long-term exposure.

Fragrances

Fragrance can irritate reactive skin and certain fragrance ingredients can sensitise the skin, potentially causing allergic reactions on future exposure.

Drying Alcohols

Can dry and strip the skin leaving it irritated and stinging.

Synthetic Colourants

unnecessary for the moisturising function and can in some cases cause allergic-type reactions.

Essential Oils

Can contain naturally occurring fragrance allergens capable of irritating or sensitising susceptible skin. Natural doesn't necessarily mean gentler for sensitive skin.

Formaldehyde Releasing Preservatives

Formaldehyde is a recognised human carcinogen and skin sensitiser. Certain preservatives can release small amounts of formaldehyde over time
