Do You Really Need a Neck Cream, or Is the Beauty Industry Selling You Another Step?
Do You Really Need a Separate Neck Cream? Let's Talk About It.
If you've noticed more and more brands launching creams specifically for your neck lately, you're not imagining it.
From firming neck creams to treatments promising to tighten sagging skin, the beauty industry seems determined to convince us that our necks need an entirely separate skincare routine.
But do they really?
Well, I'm going to give you an answer that might surprise you coming from a skincare brand.
Probably not.
Why Is Everyone Suddenly Talking About Neck Creams?
As we get older, the skin around our neck naturally changes. It tends to be thinner, produces less oil and can show signs of ageing earlier than other areas.
Collagen and elastin levels gradually decline, meaning our skin becomes less firm and less able to bounce back.
But there's another reason I believe neck creams are becoming such a big talking point.
Weight loss.
With the rise of GLP-1 medications such as Mounjaro and Wegovy, more people are experiencing significant weight loss.
And while losing weight can come with plenty of benefits, it can also leave us with looser skin, particularly around the face and neck.
This isn't exclusive to weight-loss medications. It can happen with any significant weight loss, especially as we get older and our skin has naturally lost some of its elasticity.
And, of course, where there's a new skincare concern, there's usually a new beauty product promising to fix it.
But Does Your Neck Actually Need Different Ingredients?
Here's where things get interesting.
Yes, the skin on your neck is slightly different from the skin on your face, but that doesn't automatically mean it needs different skincare products.
Take ingredients such as:
-
Palmitoyl Tripeptide-5: A peptide studied for its ability to support collagen production and improve the appearance of firmness and fine lines.
-
Retinoids: Help encourage skin renewal and support collagen production.
-
Niacinamide: Helps strengthen the skin barrier and improve uneven skin tone.
-
Hyaluronic Acid: Attracts water to the skin, helping it look plumper and making fine lines caused by dehydration less noticeable.
These ingredients can be beneficial for your neck, but here's the thing.
They're not exclusive to neck creams.
In fact, many of them are already sitting in the skincare products you use on your face.
For example, our Hydra-Firm Serum contains Palmitoyl Tripeptide-5, a collagen-signalling peptide chosen to help support firmer-looking, smoother skin.
Hydra-Firm and Hydra-Smooth, both contain Hyaluronic Acid in 2 different molecular weights to target different depths and Hydra-Smooth also contains Niacinamide, because they are great ingredients for the skin
But that's the key, they're ingredients that makes just as much sense on your neck as they do on your face which is why we included them.
Your skin doesn't suddenly respond differently to an ingredient simply because the packaging says neck cream instead of face serum.
Can Neck Creams Actually Tighten Loose Skin?
This is where I think we need to be realistic.
There's a big difference between improving how firm your skin looks and actually tightening significant loose skin.
Good skincare can absolutely help improve hydration, smooth fine lines and support the appearance of firmer, healthier-looking skin.
But if you've experienced significant skin laxity due to ageing or weight loss, no topical cream is going to magically lift and tighten that excess skin back into place.
It simply doesn't work that way.
That's not to say skincare isn't worthwhile. It absolutely is.
But I would much rather you spend your money understanding what your products can realistically achieve than buying into promises that sound wonderful but aren't particularly realistic.
For more significant laxity, professional treatments may offer greater improvement.
So, Are Neck Creams a Waste of Money?
Not necessarily.
If your current skincare routine doesn't contain the ingredients you'd like to target your neck concerns with, then a dedicated neck product might be a perfectly sensible addition.
And if you simply enjoy having a separate neck cream, or want the peace of mind that you've thrown everything including the kitchen sink at it, that's absolutely fine too!
But if your existing products already contain those ingredients, do you really need to buy them again in a different jar?
I'd argue no.
My advice? Before buying another product, take a look at what you already own.
Make sure you're extending your suitable facial skincare down your neck and onto your chest, and don't forget your daily SPF.
The bottom line?
Your neck deserves just as much care as your face.
But that doesn't mean it needs its own skincare collection.
Better skincare isn't about adding more products.
It's just about making more of the ones you already have.
Much Love
