Embracing Autumn: Simplifying Your Skincare Routine
Hey Lovely,
I told you I was done with Summer 😂
As the leaves begin to turn, women everywhere take to Home Sense to pick up their pumpkin-spiced candles and the air takes on that crisp, cool edge. It's the perfect time to revisit our skincare routines.
Autumn is a transitional season that can wreak havoc on our skin if we don’t adapt our regimen to the changing weather. But don't worry, It doesn’t need to be complex so here’s a straightforward and easy-to-follow guide to keep your skin looking radiant all season long.
Why Change Your Skincare Routine for Autumn?
During autumn, the humidity drops, and the air becomes much drier. This can lead to skin feeling tight, flaky, and even more sensitive. Cooler weather and indoor heating can strip the skin of moisture so some of us will need to tweak our skincare routine.
Step 1: Gentle Cleansing 🪶
As the weather cools down, If you have normal or combination skin, It might be a good time to switch to a gentler cleanser. Some cleansers are a little too harsh during these colder months and can strip your skin of its natural oils, which are essential for maintaining moisture. Opt for a hydrating cleanser that will clean your skin without leaving it feeling tight and dry. I really like the Cerave Hydrating Cleanser or La Roche-Posay Toleriane Hydrating Gentle Cleanser
If you are wondering why I didn’t mention dry skin well, chances are you are already using a hydrating cleanser and if you have oilier skin, chances are your skin can still tolerate an oil banishing cleanser even during these harsher months.
Step 2: Exfoliation
Exfoliation is still important, but if you have dry, normal or combination skin you might want to dial it back a bit. Over-exfoliating can lead to irritation, especially as your skin becomes more sensitive with the changing weather.
Aim to exfoliate just once or twice per week with an enzyme or AHA exfoliator. This helps to remove dead skin cells and allows for better absorption of your skincare products.
If you are using a daily exfoliating product that your skin is very well used to, then stick with it, (if it ain't broke, don't fix it) But if you start to feel your skin is becoming dry or sensitive then definitely try dropping it to just a couple of times a week instead.
Step 3: Hydration is Key💧
One of the most important steps in your autumn skincare routine is hydration, as the air gets drier, so does your skin. The more hydration you can feed your skin, the better your skin will feel and look but it's not just your skin, your makeup will wear better throughout the day too.
Incorporate a serum onto your routine that contains multiple hydrating ingredients like Glycerin, Opuntia Ficus-Indica Seed Extract, Allantoin and Hyaluronic acid, like our Hydra-Firm Serum so you can get hydration from multiple points within the skin. This serum is packed with ingredients that help to control water reserves within the skin while firming, plumping and smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles. It’s a must have in your routine during the colder months.
Step 4: Moisturise, Moisturise, Moisturise 🧴
After applying your serum, follow up with a good moisturiser, morning and night.
Moisturiser helps to lock in all the goodness and hydration from your serums and ensure they don’t evaporate even whilst your heating is getting cranked up every few days. I would love to recommend one but I have been religiously using the one I have been working on for the last 2-3 years. I will say though, I personally prefer Gel-Cream Hybrids when it comes to moisturiser, they deliver a great burst of hydration while not being so thick that it feels greasy.
Step 5: Pay Attention to Your Lips 💋
Don’t forget your lip balm/lip masks when you leave the house. Our lips are usually the first tell-tell sign that the colder weather is starting to take it’s toll on our skins moisture levels. I usually opt for a lip mask as they are designed to last for longer and soften the skin for up to 8 hours!
Step 7: Hydrate from Within 💧
Staying hydrated is not just about what you put on your skin but also about what you put in your body. Drinking enough water is crucial for maintaining hydrated and healthy skin. Aim for 2 Litres of water a day and adding in hydrating foods like cucumber and watermelons to your food shop.
Little Extras for Autumn
- Humidifier: Consider using a humidifier at home to add moisture back into the air. This can help prevent your skin from becoming too dry while we cook in our central heated houses like a donner kebab.
